I heard a large branch snap which stopped me dead in my tracks. Up to our left at the top of a ridge was a black bear. Carly made sure to take an extra long time pointing it out to me so I would always remember my first time seeing a bear.

The ferry was filled with about 100 other backpackers and their hiking gear which was also quite a sight, seeing all the gear piled up in the hull of the boat. It almost gave us a sense that we were all in this together.
